Decongestants and expectorants are used to break up mucus and help to expel it from the body. It is important to understand that expectorant and decongestant remedies will not
necessarily dry up the sinuses. Since they promote breakup
of congestion and the expulsion of mucus, they may cause
a temporary increase in drainage as the lungs and sinuses
clear out irritants.
